Donating Makeup

Hi friends! I wasn’t originally going to make a blog post this weekend because I have been so busy with school and desperately needed to focus on my work, but this is something I am very passionate about and wanted to share.

I am currently getting my second box of donations together for an organization called Project Beauty Share. Project Beauty Share is an amazing organization located in Washington that collects gently used makeup and beauty products to sanitize and distribute to local women’s shelters.

You may be thinking – why donate makeup? Well, let’s think of what makeup means to you: empowerment, confidence, a sense of self. These are things we might take for granted, but for someone who may be struggling to get a job or get back on their feet, makeup could be a great tool for all the things just mentioned. It’s a little piece of humanity and kindness, and something that many women in these shelters may not have even been able to use in a long time. Makeup is a tool for us to feel good about ourselves, and that goes beyond just a “luxury” to me.

I am going to keep this post short and sweet, but the next time you are going through your makeup collection, think about the things you are willing to part with that could make a huge difference to someone else. Maybe you bought a lipstick but it just wasn’t the right shade or you have a bronzer that is a little too orange for you. Keep in mind, Project Beauty Share only accepts gently used products, so please do not think of donating expired or greatly used up product. Also, due to the difficulty of sanitizing, only unopened makeup that has wands (like mascara or liquid lipstick) can be accepted. Besides makeup, Project Beauty Share also accepts unused soaps, shampoos, toothpastes, feminine hygiene products etc. I will include links to their website for more information.

Unfortunately, unlike Project Beauty Share, many shelters do not have these same resources to sanitize makeup and therefore can only accept unused and unopened products. Please call your local shelters and charities if you are curious on what you can donate locally. I know in my state, many LGBTQ shelters look for these products as well. If anything, I hope I am just inspiring you to donate anything you can, whether it is clothes or goods or even a small monetary donation. I think this is a time where we really need to focus on our fellow man, and any little bit helps, even if it is “just makeup”.
